Letter: Attacks could drive good candidates away

To the Editor:
What happens after this election in the future elections? Good candidates have not only the expense and work of the campaign, but all their energy and thoughtful new ideas might come to naught because of negative campaign statements and ads. Suddenly the future of our democracy looks very bleak.
Fewer and fewer good candidates will run and there will be little choice in elections down the line. At this point in time we have the right to be independent and cross party lines to vote for the candidate we think will best represent us.
In the past, any candidate who waged a vicious campaign was defeated, no matter what party he or she came from. Let's continue to have a two-party system, a real democracy, not one defined by meanness and half or whole lies.
If a candidate has a good program and excellent ideas, there should be no need to resort to this kind of campaigning.
