To the Editor:

In 2008, I had the good fortune to work with over 80 passionate individuals in a grassroots Red Wing school referendum campaign. Considerable time went into the referendum design and education of the public. You, the public, voted Yes and Yes by overwhelming numbers.

Although this committee is not involved in the current referendum, I felt it was important for the public to know that the goals laid out by the 2008 committee were indeed met. The district was able to:

1. Get out of debt

2. Reduce class sizes in the elementary

3. Increase interventions to improve academic achievement

The 2008 operating referendum is set to expire in 2013. During the past four years the district has been financially stable and has seen steady academic gains.

Question 1 on the 2012 ballot is vital to continuing the great work that has been started in our educational system. Once financially stable, we can then work together to seek and identify the optimal long-term solution for the additional space and maintenance issues facing the district.

Strong schools are important for a strong community. Please join me in supporting the first question of the referendum Nov. 6.
