Sports registration
Winter sports registration meeting will be at 5:15 p.m. Monday Nov. 5 in the café.
Missota Leadership Conference
A number of students will participate in the Missota Leadership Conference on Tuesday Nov. 6. Students from all the conference schools will come together in Farmington, Minn., to learn leadership skills that they will then take back to their home districts.
Early release
High school students will be released at 12:15 p.m. Nov. 13 and 15. Teachers will then have professional development while teachers at other school across the district have conferences. RWHS conferences were held in October.
Burnside Elementary School
Picture re-takes
Wednesday Nov. 7 is picture re-take day for any students who either missed picture day or would like theirs re-taken. If you are having re-takes, please bring your old package with you.
Third-grade music concert
The third-grade music concert will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday Nov. 8 in the gym. Rehearsals will be at 1:40 p.m. in the gym for any parents or family members who cannot attend in the evening
Grade 4
For the past seven years, the local Lions Club has been donating dictionaries to all fourth-grade students. Lions Club members came on Monday and Tuesday to pass the dictionaries out.
Kids Junction
The children made beautiful wreaths using leaves cut out of newspaper and ribbon. The children also started a pumpkin project that includes melting crayons on a pumpkin for decoration.
Sunnyside Elementary School
Walking Wednesdays
On Oct. 31, there were 22 students who participated in the Sunnyside Sneaker program. This week’s winner is Grace Handwerk from Ms. Feders’ first-grade class.
Upcoming events
The Scholastic Book Fair and parent/teacher conferences will take place at Sunnyside later this month.
St. John's School
Government
The homeroom focus in October was government. We had visits from Sen. John Howe and Rep. Kurt Bills. Kindergarten through grade 8 also took a tour of the Government and Justice centers. Students met Judge Lawrence Clark, who told about the courts and answered questions. The children also toured the 911 dispatch office. Then they saw a Goodhue County Sheriff's car with lights and sirens. The deputy even took one of our aide's into "custody.” The group really liked that. All students had questions about various things they saw.
Voting
Tuesday Nov. 6, Mrs. Hansen will conduct a mock election with all students. The children will begin by registering and then voting. Results will be posted at lunch break.
Little Blessings
Preschoolers have started working on the songs they will sing during their Christmas service. They are learning about letter "Cc," triangles and the color brown.
Kindergarten
Students are to wear their favorite color to school Monday Nov. 5. It can be any article of clothing. We are working on a new book and will be taking pictures.
Grades 1, 2
The following students have completed a Memory Treasure Sheet: Connor Ballman, Brady Arneson, Dru Blanchette, Nicholas Mahoney, Lydia Mason, Jonah Bain, Gina Pritchard and Chloe Sorenson. This is just wonderful! Busy Bees are Dru Blanchette and Aiden Roper.
Grades 3, 4, 5
Students are working with nouns and proper nouns. In science classes they are finishing up their study of the ear. Minnesota inventors are the focus in social studies classes.
Grades 6, 7, 8
Everyday Math 6 students had a test and reviewed some of the common errors on a few problems. Transition Math is learning about different ways of representing numbers and relating them. Students have studied fractions, decimals, percents, square roots and probability. Algebra students are nearing the end of chapter three, which dealt with linear equations and inequalities. Grades 6 through 8 completed an experiment to test sensitivity of different body parts in science class.
Colvill Family Center
Colvill Kids Mixed Ages
Miss Lila’s classes will learn about shapes this week. We will read “Brown Rabbit’s Shape Book” by Alan Baker. We will make our own pictures out of shapes. Also, we will play some games to help us learn the names of the shapes.
Colvill Kids 3’s
Miss Katie’s classes will read “Brown Rabbit's Shape Book” by Alan Baker. We will go on a shape hunt and play a shape game. We will create a picture using different shapes.
Colvill Kids 4’s
Miss Catie’s classes will read “The Very Lonely Firefly” by Eric Carle. We will learn the letter "Cc" with Callie Cat. We will learn how Eric Carle makes pictures for his books, and we will make our own fireflies.
Conferences
Conferences will be Nov. 12, 13, and 14. Please check your child’s backpack for the scheduled conference time.

Red Cottage Montessori
Ghost necklaces
On Monday, students began making ghost necklaces out of glue. They were ready on Halloween to decorate with eyes and mouths to take home.
Fire safety
On Tuesday, Cameron and Isabelle's dad, Josh, joined us from the Red Wing Fire Department to talk about fire safety during fire safety month. The children learned about smoke detectors, stop, drop and roll, and calling 911 in an emergency. They also learned that if they were ever caught in a fire, someone in a fire suit with a mask and air tank would find them. Josh dressed in his fire gear so we all could see that he is not scary! Children toured the aerial ladder truck and each child was able to sit in the driver's seat.
Halloween
On Halloween, children sang their Halloween song, read Halloween stories, ate “bat cheese” on crackers and clementines decorated as jack-o-lanterns. The extended day children designed skeletons out of pasta noodles to begin discussions about body parts.
No school
There was no school at Red Cottage Friday as Kai attended a conference on writing in the Montessori environment. There will be no school Nov. 9.
Under the Rainbow
Preschool 1
Preschool 1 has been busy making spiders, ghost footprints and going on ghost hunts! They experienced cooking making candy corn treats and witches brooms. They are learning the Spanish words for black (negro) and four (quarto) as well as focusing on the letter "E" and circles.
Preschool 2
Preschool 2 loves early literacy. "I Am Not Scared!" by Hans Wilhelm, "Two Little Witches" by Harriet Ziefert, "Say Boo!" by Lynda Graham and "The Halloween Party" are some of the books they read during Halloween week. They explored with magnifying glasses and practiced the Spanish word for the number three, the letter Hh and the word costume. Orange and oval are the color and shape students focused their week on.
Jumpstart Classroom
The Jumpstart group was excited to take a field trip to Deer Crest this week. The children dressed in costumes and paraded around to the residents. They sang some Halloween songs and enjoyed visiting with everyone! Other activities for the week included Halloween patterns and sorting games, slime boo mix, Halloween vocabulary and Spanish review.
