The Red Wing girls swimming and diving team finished sixth at the 2012 Missota Conference Championships Saturday in Northfield.
Chanhassen won the meet and Northfield came in second.
“The conference championships went well considering the girls were not fully tapered,” Red Wing head coach Kevin O’Brien said.
Ashley Thompson, a junior for the Wingers, took third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 12.02 seconds, and also placed sixth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:24.9.
Red Wing’s 200-yard medley relay came in fourth with a time of 1:58.31, nearing closer to the state qualifying time of 1:55.23. The Wingers also placed fourth in the 200 freestyle relay. Red Wing eighth-grader Claire King, seventh-grader Carly Boisen, senior Jess Kolsky and ninth-grader Ingrid Olson finished the race in 1:46.76.
The state cut time is 1:43.01 and the team hopes to shave off those 3.75 seconds by sections, O’Brien said.
Olson was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 25.85 and placed fifth in the 500 freestyle. She swam the race in 5:36.82. Senior Sydney Steger came in fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.98, a personal record. The state qualifying time in the 100 backstroke is 1:03.04.
“The team did really well at this meet,” O’Brien said. “We had the lead over Chaska for a little bit until the 100 back when they took that lead back.”
Kolsky was fourth in the 1-meter diving competition with 278 points.
“The girls are on track to have some great swims at sections in two weeks, with hopefully some state qualifying times,” O’Brien said.
The Section 1A swimming and diving meet will take place in Austin, with the preliminary round on Nov. 7 and the finals on Nov. 9.
