Cannon Falls started slowly against Pine Island Wednesday in Cannon Falls, but a touchdown late in the second quarter propelled the Bombers to a 26-0 victory in the regular-season finale.

Junior quarterback Hunter Johnson found junior Jordan Lundell for a 5-yard touchdown with 18 seconds remaining in the first half to give Cannon Falls a boost heading into halftime.

“We didn’t start the game the way we wanted,” Cannon Falls head coach Josh Hofstedt said. “In the end, everything worked out.”

The Bombers (5-3, 3-3 HVL Blue) scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and the defense stymied Pine Island to pick up the victory. Senior Ian Althoff scored on a 43-yard touchdown run with 10:04 left in the game, and added another from one yard out less than a minute later to give Cannon Falls a 20-0 lead. Senior Andrew Anderson ran in another 1-yard touchdown with 1:51 remaining for the final score. Anderson also had a team-leading nine tackles for the defense.

Althoff finished with 23 carries for 149 yards and the two touchdowns to lead the Bombers. Johnson was 11 of 18 for 122 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception, while Lundell hauled in four receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown. Johnson also ran for 50 yards on 10 attempts.

Third-seeded Cannon Falls will host sixth-seeded Minneapolis Edison for the first round of Section 4AAA playoffs, beginning Tuesday at John Burch Park in Cannon Falls.
