Girls Tennis: Lake City trio clinches state tournament berths

Lake City will send its top singles player and top doubles team to the Class 1A state girls tennis tournament after both reached the Section 1A finals Tuesday at the West Hills Tennis and Fitness in Owatonna.
Senior Amy Orthaus will advance in the singles competition for the Tigers, and their top doubles pair of seniors Allison Harvey and Katie Wallerich will participate in the doubles tournament.
Third-seeded Orthaus, a state entrant last year, is headed back to state after securing a comeback victory during her Section 1A semifinal match 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 against second-seeded Jenny Mulvey of the Trinity School at River Ridge. Facing top-seeded Sofia Terzic, of Rochester Lourdes, Orthaus came up short as Terzic clinched her second state berth with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Harvey and Wallerich won 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals against Cannon Falls’ senior Allie Serres and ninth-grader Maddie Adel.
In the section finals, the top-seeded Tigers lost to second-seeded Jessica Alexander and Rachel Kamath, of Rochester Lourdes, 6-4, 6-2.
The Class 1A state girls tennis tournament will take place Oct. 23-26 at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
