Red Wing senior Katie Kelly and junior Emily Stegora made the Section 1AA sub-section final Tuesday at the Rochester Athletic Club.
Kelly and Stegora defeated Northfield’s No. 2 doubles team 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and dominated Lakeville North’s No. 1 doubles team in the second round, 6-0, 6-1.
“They had just a superb day,” Red Wing head coach Randy Decker said. “It was some of the best tennis I’ve ever seen Katie and Emily play. It wasn’t like their opponents played poorly. Katie and Emily were just awesome.”
After that win, the pair had to face Rochester Century’s Katherine and Jessica Aney. Jessica Aney is the defending Class 2A state singles champion. The Wingers lost 6-0, 6-1 but were the only doubles’ team to win a game against the Aney sisters.
“Katie and Emily played fine,” Decker said. “I told them, ‘Jessie Aney could probably win the doubles title playing with me.’ That’s how good she is. She’s just unreal.”
Red Wing’s other doubles team in section play, sophomore Lauren Brooks and senior Megan Clemons, dropped its match 6-4, 6-2 to a team from Austin. Ninth-grader Morley Struss and eighth-grader Emily Otteson each lost their first round match in the singles tournament.
