As part of October being National Substance Abuse Awareness Month, Chemical Health Initiative Councils across Goodhue County are launching the Medicine Chest Challenge.

As part of October being National Substance Abuse Awareness Month, Chemical Health Initiative Councils across Goodhue County are launching the Medicine Chest Challenge.

In an effort to protect children from prescription drug abuse, the challenge requests that parents follow three steps: Monitor, secure and dispose.

Parents should start by keeping track of the number of pills that are in each prescription bottle in the house. Next, CHI advises them to secure the medications in a place where kids don’t have access, such as a locked cabinet. Last, safely disposing of expired or unused prescriptions is critical. Area medication drop-off sites include:

• Goodhue County Law Enforcement Center lobby, 430 W. Sixth St., Red Wing

• Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, 401 Main St., Wanamingo

• Cannon Falls Police Department foyer, 918 River Road, Cannon Falls

• Zumbrota Police Department foyer, 50 W. Second St., Zumbrota.
