Cross-Country: Lake City girls finish 10th at Swain Invite

The Lake City girls cross country team finished 10th out of 24 teams during the Class 1A race of the Swain Invitational at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth.

Esko won the meet, Holdingford was second and Minnehaha Academy placed third.

Ninth-grader Morgan Dammann finished 37th to lead the Tigers in 17 minutes, 15.1 seconds. Sophomore Lydia Taylor took 39th in 17:17.6, sophomore Hannah Alitz ran in 17:26.3 for 45th, junior Samantha Keller placed 50th and senior Taylor Siewert finished in 105th place in 19:13.4.

Lake City senior Carston Dammann finished 9th in the boys’ varsity Class 1A race in 16:46.9. Dammann was the only Tiger boy running the varsity race as Lake City head coach Howard Cook placed many of his younger runners in the junior varsity race to get experience. The Tigers won both the girls and boys junior varsity races.

“It was a good meet for us,” Cook said. “Where we finished was fine. It was a big improvement from a year ago.”

Seventh-grader Liv Kozlowski won the girls junior varsity race in 17:31.4 and eighth-grader Carl Kozlowski took first in 18:03.1. Sophomore Colin Fritz was second in 18:28.9.

“We moved them up (from middle school races) because from this point on they’re going to be running 5,000 and 4,000 meters,” Cook said. “We ran them all there because of how young they are.

“Every single boy other than Carston ran a personal best,” Cook added. “(Dammann) ran the second fastest race he’s ever run. The only place he’s run faster was on our flat, Hok-Si-La course.”

Lake City races against Tuesday in Austin.
