Junior goalkeeper Lindy Holmstadt made 17 saves for Lake City Thursday but the Tigers fell 3-0 to Rochester Lourdes in Rochester.

Despite the loss, Lake City head coach Mark Spence was pleased with the Tigers’ improvement on defense after giving up 15 goals in their last two games.

“We played a much better game defensively than we have in a long time,” he said. “It was a great effort by our girls to play a tough team like that so well. Obviously they controlled the ball a lot more than we did but we hung in there and played a good game against them. … We gave them a run for their money.”

The Eagles (12-3) scored their first goal midway through the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Lake City (1-14, 1-6 HVL) deflected a shot into its own net to fall behind 2-0 and Lourdes added the final goal with five minutes left in the game.

The Tigers will play Tuesday during the first round of the Section 1A playoffs.
