Cross-Country: Red Wing fizzles at Victoria Lions Invitational

The Red Wing cross country team competed in its third meet in a week Tuesday at the Victoria Lions Invitational at Chaska’s Par 30 Golf Course and it showed.

The Wingers boys took 16th out of 22 teams and the girls came in 20th of 23 teams.

“Our big meet woes kind of continue,” Red Wing head coach Jesse Nelson said. “I’ll take the responsibility for why the kids weren’t as sharp as they’ve been. … I asked a little too much of the kids to race three times in a week and that’s on me.”

The Wingers were led by junior Aiden Winn, who came in 29th overall to lead the boys in 17 minutes, 13.4 seconds and junior Lindsay Scribner, who finished 42nd for the girls in 15:58.3. Neither runner was happy with where they placed but both ran well.

“Scribner and Winn raced pretty solid races,” Nelson said. “We’ll regroup and we look forward to our Alexandria race.”

Red Wing eighth-grader Elle Bryant and junior Darrick Jackson impressed Nelson with their performances for the girls and boys teams, respectively. Bryant finished in 17:25.6 for 128th and Jackson came in 100th in 18:13.8. Both were fourth in their respective races for the Wingers.

“They were definitely two bright spots,” Nelson said.

Red Wing gets a short break before racing in the Alexandria Invitational Saturday.

“We’re a little mentally tired, a little fried right now,” Nelson said. “We’ve got to have a pretty short memory with this one. We’ll get back to work tomorrow.”
