After tripping up in the first set against Goodhue, the Zumbrota-Mazeppa volleyball team was able to recover in a big way, picking up a four-set victory in Hiawatha Valley League play Tuesday in Goodhue.
Z-M won 17-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-14.
“Goodhue came out on fire,” said Cougars head coach Stacy Liebenow. “They went on a 12-0 run to start, and then our girls came back for a 6-0 run.
“My girls fought back pretty well when we could have not fought back and died.”
The Cougars got a team-high nine kills from Claira Sullivan, while Hailey Dykes had a total of nine blocks. Libero Geena Miller solidified the back row with 17 digs, and Kaitlen Buck finished with 20 set assists for Z-M (9-6, 7-2 HVL).
For the Wildcats, Emilee Roschen had a standout performance in the back row with 30 digs.
“The last couple games, we’ve really challenged her to take charge,” Goodhue head coach Andy Kimball said. “We believe that if she’s that good of a player, she needs to act like it.”
The Wildcats (6-9, 4-5 HVL) had 10 total ace serves, and Mikayla Tipcke had a seven-kill, 21-set assist effort in the loss. Kali Ryan had a team-high eight kills.
Z-M hosts Cannon Falls on Thursday, while Goodhue hosts Hayfield on Thursday.
