Boys Soccer: Wingers adjust, but fall to Northfield

With three games left in the regular season, the Red Wing boys soccer team wanted to tweak its offense starting on Thursday in hopes of boosting an offense that has averaged just 1.3 goals per game.

Facing a Northfield squad that allowed under a goal a game, the Wingers’ offense never got on track in a 6-0 Missota Conference loss Thursday in Northfield.

“We wanted to try a couple new setups,” said Red Wing head coach Brian Quigley. “We didn’t play everything exactly the way we hoped. If we didn’t do that, we would have maybe held them to four or five goals. (Northfield) is a very strong team.”

The Wingers (4-6-1, 0-4-1 Missota) return home Tuesday, hosting New Prague on Senior Night.

In the final two games, Quigley and the Wingers will continue to tweak the offense, hoping for something to click before section play begins.

“We’re hoping to do well in the last two games and move up in the section and the conference,” Quigley said. “Right now, we’re anywhere between eight and 10 or 11 in a 16-team section. We’d like to get up a little bit higher and get us set up for a good postseason push.”
