Goodhue was within a point of Triton at the end of the first quarter in Dodge Center Friday but then the Cobras speed took over.

Triton piled up 404 yards of total offense in a 44-14 victory.

“Triton’s got really good team speed and just a lot of athletes,” Goodhue head coach Tony Poncelet said. “Our guys battled hard but in the end, speed won.”

The Cobras (2-2, 2-1 HVL Gold) scored first at 8 minutes, 6 seconds of the opening quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Justin Erdman to go up 7-0 after the extra point. The Wildcats (2-2, 1-1 HVL Gold) struck back on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Schumacher to Alex Weckerling with 44 seconds left in the first quarter but the kick failed, and Triton used three second-quarter touchdowns to push the lead to 26-6 by halftime.

The Cobras tallied two more touchdowns in the third quarter before James Jonas scored on a 34-yard touchdown run for Goodhue, with a two-point conversion successful, at 4:58 of the fourth quarter. Max Henderson punched in a 1-yard run for Triton’s final score.

Jonas finished with 58 yards rushing on three carries and Dillon Huemann had 16 rushes for 42 yards to lead the Wildcats. Goodhue had 203 yards of total offense.

The Wildcats host Zumbrota-Mazeppa next Friday.
