Girls Tennis: Red Wing rolls at home

Red Wing kept its winning streak going Tuesday in a 6-1 victory against Academy of Holy Angels at Twin Bluff Middle School in Red Wing.

The Wingers (9-7, 2-2 Missota) dropped two sets as a team in winning their fourth match in a row.

“We played really well tonight,” Red Wing head coach Randy Decker said. “It was a good win.”

At No. 1 singles, Wingers’ junior Emily Stegora was narrowly defeated by Rachel Snyder 6-4, 7-6 (4).

“Emily played her really tough,” Decker said. “Snyder is one of the best No. 1’s in the conference.”

In her first match back with the team, Red Wing junior Nicole Schammel won easily against Carly Wermers at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

“She looked really good,” Decker said. “It’s good to have her back. It’ll certainly make things more interesting with these last matches coming up.”

Eighth-grader Emily Otteson won 7-6 (4), 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Wingers and ninth-grader Morley Struss defeated Elenor Goblirsch 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Red Wing continued its strong play at doubles as well. Senior Katie Kelly and ninth-grader Solveig Christenson won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, sophomore Lauren Brooks and senior Megan Clemons secured a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles and juniors Katie Carlson and Serena Feehan breezed through their match at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-2, 6-1.

The Wingers travel to face Northfield.
