Red Wing won both its games Saturday at the Albert Lea Invitational and took second place.

The Wingers (3-5) fell one points shy of winning the tournament, host Albert Lea won, because they scored one less goal.

Red Wing defeated Fairmont Area Schools 1-0 in the first game and won 3-2 against Stewartville in the second game.

Ninth-grader Caitie Turcotte netted a goal to win against Fairmont, with the assist to senior Meagan Brown. The Wingers had eight shots on goal in game one and held Fairmont to just three shots.

“Our defense was solid the first game, they were incredible,” Red Wing head coach Dusty Beckman said. “The first game was definitely won by our defense.”

Against Stewartville, Turcotte scored again with ninth-grader Maddy Hardyman getting the assist and Hardyman added two goals of her own. Senior Dani Welscher had the assists on both of Hardyman’s goals. The Wingers put 11 shots on goal and the Tigers had five shots.

“They were stringing passes together so well,” Beckman said. “They were developing a system of attack. … They were running combinations. We’re starting to get to that level where we want to be.”

Red Wing plays on the road Tuesday in Farmington.
