The Goodhue Wildcats played lights out Friday night — literally.
Goodhue knocked off Hayfield 36-21 in the Hiawatha Valley League Gold Division game in Hayfield. The game was suspended for roughly 30 minutes early in the third quarter when the lights went out.
“We had just intercepted a pass and were lining up on the line of scrimmage when the lights went out,” Goodhue coach Tony Poncelet said.
Poncelet said the delay was an inconvenience, but wasn’t much of a factor in the outcome. Perhaps a bigger deal for the Wildcats was that the squad was playing without defensive coordinator Billy Diercks, who missed the game because his wife was in labor.
“Our defensive leaders did a great job for us,” Poncelet said. “They really stepped up.”
Goodhue’s top performers on offense were once again Dillon Huemann and Kyle Drehmel.
Huemann carried the ball 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns, while Drehmel rushed 15 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
The Wildcats’ other touchdown came from Austin Buck, who caught a 24-yard pass from Tyler Schumacher.
The Wildcats are now
1-0 in the HVL Gold and 2-1 overall. Goodhue plays Triton next week.
