Letter: Defacement raises duck's value

To the Editor:

What is this? Somebody hates a duck statue?

I am glad it happened for one reason. I have seen the duck floating about town and thought, nearly subconsciously, "Mmmmm, s’pose some fiberglass wizard in some factory somewhere made that for us."

Now I know it was made by our local Jason Jech.

I don't know Jason, but I do know his mom, mother-in-law and wife. Not only does every great man have a good woman or three in his life, that man is sometimes pretty great on his own.

I think I would like to see the story of how the duck got made. The bits and pieces I have put together since Saturday, when I heard the story of the trials that desecration allowed, has made me come to love and appreciate that duck.

From here on in, I stand when the flags go by and when the refurbished duck goes by. Turned dross into gold in my opinion, and I thank whomever first thought to do a dumb thing that turned into a real awakening for me.
