Fresh off going 3-1 in a weekend tournament at Irondale, the Red Wing volleyball team had some momentum rolling its way.

But coming back onto the court on Tuesday, the Wingers struggled to capitalize on that momentum, getting swept on the road by Rochester Century in a non-conference match. The Panthers won 25-13, 25-10, 25-13.

The biggest factor in Tuesday’s match, according to Red Wing head coach Heidi Ulwelling, is the amount of unforced errors by both teams.

“Century had an even-keel that didn’t make a lot of unforced errors whereas we had more errors,” Ulwelling said. “They weren’t overpowering, we just weren’t focused.”

Pacing the Red Wing attack was senior outside hitter Macy Kelly, who had three kills and a block assist. Freshman Sydney Book had four kills, but struggled with six hitting errors. She also had two blocks (1 solo, 1 assist). Mary Anthony also had a solo block for the Wingers, who drop to 4-8 overall.

“We had some momentum coming into (Tuesday’s) game,” Ulwelling said. “We beat Chisago Lakes (on Saturday), and they had a couple good, tall hitters. We were just flat tonight, it happens. Right now we’re trying to find what will create a better focus for this team.”

Red Wing will try to rebound on Thursday when the team travels to Farmington for a Missota Conference match.
