Boys Soccer: Wingers win 2nd straight

In its last two games, the Red Wing boys soccer team has shown a flair for the dramatic.

Two days after beating Lake City on a goal with two minutes left in the game, the Wingers got another late goal during their non-conference game against Stewartville Monday in Red Wing.

With a minute left to go before halftime, Red Wing senior Ryan Rehder set up for a corner kick. Rehder booted the kick in front of the net, and senior midfielder Alex Rezanzoff snuck a header past the Tigers’ goalkeeper for the 1-0 advantage before the break.

The captain-to-captain connection resulted in the only goal of the contest.

“At least we got (the goal) in the first half this time,” Wingers head coach Brian Quigley joked.

After starting the season 0-2, Red Wing has rattled off two straight victories to move to 2-0. Already, Quigley is seeing the boost from his team in the locker room.

“We’re feeling pretty good,” Quigley said. “There’s still quite a bit to work on before our game on Thursday. With the chances we had today, we need to start finishing our shots. Hopefully we will get it figured out.”

At the net, Wingers goalie Andy Tarr got his second straight shutout, stopping seven shots in the victory. The defense put together another stellar performance for Red Wing.

“We were very solid on defense again today,” Quigley said. “Towards the end, we moved a defender to midfield to try and generate some offense, and our defense still held on and did very well.”

Now with a win streak going, the Wingers complete their three-game home stand on Thursday, hosting Shakopee in the first Missota Conference game of the season.
