The Red Wing volleyball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday during the Irondale tournament in New Brighton, beating Lakeview Christian in the first round 25-16, 25-5.

From there, the Wingers were able to put a string of victories together, going 3-1 in tournament play for a third-place finish.

After the Lakeview Christian victory, the Wingers lost to Minnehaha Academy (25-13, 25-12) before rattling off two straight victories against host Irondale (27-25, 25-16) and Chisago Lakes (15-25, 27-25, 15-11).

In the victory over Lakeview Christian, Abby Johnson and Taylor Quandt combined for nine ace serves, finishing with five and four, respectively. Macy Kelly controlled the net with six kills.

Against Irondale, Kelly had seven ace serves, while Quandt added four ace serves and two block assists. Mary Anthony led the team with four kills.

In the third-place match, McKenna Schaffer continued the Wingers’ dominant serving day with seven aces. Sydney Book tallied five kills in the victory.

“We played tough in the second and third sets in the win over Chisago Lakes,” said Red Wing head coach Heidi Ulwelling. “It was a back-and-forth match and it was great to see them come together and pull it out.”

The Wingers (4-7) are on the road for their next two contests, taking on Rochester Century on Tuesday and Farmington on Thursday.
