Volleyball: Sabers sharp in win over Wingers
Red Wing on a four-game losing streak after falling in three sets to ninth-ranked Shakopee on ThursdayBy: R-E Sports Staff, The Republican Eagle
Facing off with the No. 9-ranked Shakopee Sabers Thursday at home, Red Wing dropped its fourth straight match, falling 25-11, 25-13, 25-3.
“We played them pretty tough in the second game,” said Wingers head coach Heidi Ulwelling. “We had (Shakopee head coach) Matt Busch off the bench, reorganizing their serve-receive. We were up 9-8 in the second set. But things fell apart in the third.”
Sydney Book led Red Wing offensively with three kills. At the service line, McKenzie Cota was a perfect 9-for-9 with two aces. Libero Abby Johnson finished with a team-high eight digs.
“A lot of good things came out of the first and second sets,” Ulwelling said. “The rest, we’ll have to erase from our memories.”
Looking to stop their skid, the Wingers travel to New Brighton on Saturday to take part in the Irondale Invitational. Red Wing opens pool play at 9 a.m. against Lakeview Christian.
