Girls Soccer: PIZM loses heartbreaker in OT
Rochester Lourdes scores the game-winning goal with 48 seconds left to sneak by the PanthersBy: R-E Sports Staff, The Republican Eagle
The Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa girls soccer team’s three-game win streak came to a heartbreaking end on Thursday, as Rochester Lourdes scored a goal with 48 seconds remaining in overtime to secure a 3-2 victory in Rochester.
The Panthers (3-1-1 overall) were disappointed after the loss, but head coach Doug Weincouff couldn’t fault the effort of his team on Thursday.
“The girls are playing really well, and even though we lost tonight,” Weincouff said, “I have great confidence moving forward. That’s the best we’ve played against Lourdes in the eight years I’ve been here.”
Cede Finstuen had a pair of first-half goals for PIZM, including a penalty shot after Abby Gushulak was taken down in the box.
“I was so proud of our girls, Weincouff said. “They gave everything they had. Sometimes you play a great game and you still lose.”
The Panthers look to rebound on Monday when they host Lake City in Pine Island.
