Goodhue got off to a solid start in Set 1 against Kenyon-Wanamingo on Tuesday, picking up a 25-22 victory to go up 1-0. But errors at the service line caught up with the Wildcats as the Knights won the match 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 in Kenyon.
Mikayla Tipcke and Emilee Roschen each had three ace serves for Goodhue, but 11 service errors ultimately caught up to the Wildcats.
“It was just a messy quality of play, and they kept it cleaner than we did,” said Goodhue head coach Andy Kimball. “We kind of hurt ourselves tonight. Give credit to Kenyon for not playing to our level.”
Along the net, Mikayla Miller finished with a team-high 10 kills, while Tipcke slammed down nine kills for Goodhue.
Paige Gilster and Brittney Flom had double-digit kills for K-M, finishing with 15 and 11, respectively. Setter Sarah Hildebrandt quarterbacked the Knights’ offense with 21 set assists, and Bailey Auseth added 23 digs.
With the victory, Kenyon-Wanamingo moves to 1-1 as the team prepares to take on Class AA’s No. 2-ranked team, Stewartville, on Thursday. Falling to 0-1 to start the season, the Wildcats look to recover on Thursday against Cannon Falls.
“The girls have had only a couple matches to work on,” Kimball said. “In the last couple years, we’ve struggled the first time out.”
