Football: Kasson-Mantorville rushes to victory against Lake City

Kasson-Mantorville running back Broc Berge got loose to the tune of 177 rushing yards and three touchdowns as the KoMets beat Lake City in Kasson.

Berge’s 75-yard run in the third quarter gave Kasson-Mantorville its first lead of the game with 8 minutes, 48 seconds left to play in the third quarter. It came on the first play from scrimmage for the KoMets and turned the tide in their favor.

On Kasson-Mantorville’s next possession quarterback Riley Donovan went 52 yards on the first play to extend the lead to 28-14.

Kasson-Mantorville wiped out the Tigers’ first-quarter effort, which put them up 14-0. Lake City quarterback Ben Schramski threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter, the first a 29-yard strike to Elliot Cox and the second a 16-yard pass to Jake Griebenow.

The Tigers cut it to a one possession game on Mitch Kuchinka’s 1-yard run with 59 seconds left in the third quarter.

Schramski finished 9 of 23 for 146 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Lake City finished with 222 yards rushing with Kuchinka leading the way with 87 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Will Balow rushed for 83 yards on 12 carries and Cox went for 60 yards.

The KoMets finished with 288 yards rushing with Donovan adding 96 yards on 15 carries. Donovan also went 9 of 15 passing for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

The KoMets drove deep into Lake City territory to start the fourth quarter but when the drive stalled, Kasson-Mantorville attempted a field goal. On the attempt Lake City got called on a running into the placeholder penalty. It resulted in a 15-yard penalty and a first down, which led to a 6-yard touchdown run by Berge to put the KoMets up 34-21 with 8:37 left to play.

The Tigers scored on a Balow 6-yard run with 4:26 left to make it 34-27.

Lake City got the ball back with a little more than 2 minutes left in the game, but after a sack on third down, faced a fourth-and-30. Schramski had his desperation pass intercepted.

The Tigers face Hayfield Friday in Hayfield.
