Girls Tennis: Red Wing drops match at Hastings

Hastings won the first three matches at home Wednesday but Red Wing stormed back to win the next three before succumbing to a 4-3 defeat.

Wingers junior Emily Stegora won her second consecutive match at No. 1 singles against a Czech foreign exchange student, Red Wing head coach Randy Decker said, in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

“She’s playing smarter,” Decker said of Stegora. “There are no easy days at No. 1 singles. It really takes some mental toughness. She’s been a really great development for us this year.”

At No. 4 singles, ninth-grader Morley Struss defeated Anna Foster 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).

The Wingers (3-2) other win came at No. 2 doubles, where junior Katie Carlson and sophomore Lauren Brooks won a tight match 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (8-6), 6-2.

“Katie and Lauren pulled ahead and it was really impressive,” Decker said. “They’ve just been playing really well under pressure.”

Red Wing gets a short break before traveling to face River Falls Tuesday.
