Red Wing got three top 10 finishes Monday on the boys side to win the Wabasha-Kellogg Gallop Invitational at Coffee Mill Country Club in Wabasha.

The Wingers scored 49 points and Aiden Winn led the team with a third-place finish. Winn finished near a personal best time in 17 minutes, 20.1 seconds on the 5-kilometer course.

Marcus Warrington also came near a personal best time with a sixth-place finish. Warrington finished in 17:58.7. Joe Partington finished 10th in 18:12.6 to give Red Wing its third top 10 finisher.

“Aiden and Marcus both went out way too fast, but the nice thing is we know they can still hold it,” Wingers head coach Jesse Nelson said.

Winn and Warrington finished the first mile in 5:07 and Nelson said the section meet doesn’t even go out that fast.

Freshman George Nemanich nearly cracked the top 10 with a 12th-place finish and a time of 18:18 and Philip Mitchell took 18th in 18:34.

Plainview-Elgin-Millville finished second with 62 points.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa/Kenyon-Wanamingo took fifth with Ben Nystuen leading the team with a 15th-place finish in 18:22.2. Micah Grove placed 21st in 18:46.1 while James Drettwan took 25th in 19:17.2, Ben Kleese finished 32nd in 20:11.3 and Luke Nelson finished in 20:59.1 for 57th place.

Girls place four in top 10 despite missing three runners

Lindsay Scribner, Elise Leise, Emily Dech and Juila Hofer gave Red Wing four runners in the top 10 as it won the meet with 46 points.

Plainview-Elgin-Millville took second with 57 points and had just two runners in the top 10.

The Wingers ran without No. 1 runner Kelsee Anderson, Hailee Johnson and Adrienne Hicks and used their depth to win the meet.

Anderson sprained her ankle at the River Falls meet and did not compete while Johnson, who suffered dehydration at River Falls, was held out for medical precautions.

Scribner placed second overall in 16 minutes, 31.9 seconds on the 4-kilometer course and Leise took third in 17:05. Emily Dech, Julia Hofer and Hannah Rosenow filled in for the missing runners and provided a boost.

Dech finished seventh in 18:16.2 and Hofer took ninth in 18:28.5. Rosenow placed 25th in 19:54.8. It was Hofer’s first 4-kilometer race in her career.

“Obviously they responded and that’s pretty pleasing and rewarding,” Nelson said. “Sometimes when your team has misfortune they have to rise to the occasion.”

Both teams head to St. Olaf Friday for the Melby Invite.
