A good year for organic farmers

Last year was generally a good year for Minnesota’s organic crop producers, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture reported. In 2011, average and median net farm income for crop farms increased from the year before. In 2011, average and median net farm income for crop farms increased from the year before. In addition, key financial measures, including rate of return on assets, fell in “the acceptable strong range,” the MDA said.

However, organic dairy farms did somewhat worse. The MDA found that dairy profits declined in 2011, likely due to feed and forage prices that rose throughout the year.

These results were published in the MDA’s 2011 Minnesota Organic Farm Performance report, which studied financial data from 61 certified organic farmers.
