Amateur Baseball: Aces’ streak halted by extra-inning loss

Zach Laffey had an incredible night at the plate for Red Wing against Dundas Friday in Dundas but the Aces couldn’t hold a one-run lead in the ninth inning and fell 7-6 in 12 innings.

Laffey finished 5-for-5 with two home runs, two walks and three RBI but also made two errors in the game, including a costly misplay in the 12th inning that set up the Dukes’ winning run and gave Red Wing its first loss of the Section 1B playoffs. Kyle Blahnik was 3-for-7 with a double as Red Wing had 16 hits and walked eight times but stranded 19 runners in the loss.

Steve Loos led fourth-seeded Dundas, going 4-for-6 with two RBI and Patrick Wadzinski was 3-for-4 with two RBI, including the game-winner. The Dukes tallied 18 hits.

Andy Gibart started on the mound for the sixth-seeded Aces, allowing four runs in four innings on nine hits. Aaron Johnson pitched the next seven and got the loss, giving up one earned run on nine hits and one walk while striking out four.

The first of Zach Laffey’s home runs came with one out in the third inning to put Red Wing ahead 2-1 and his second was a two-run home run in the fifth inning to pull the Aces back even at 4-4.

The Dukes scored an unearned run in the seventh inning and took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning but a two-run error gave the lead back to Red Wing going into the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Aces gave up the lead, allowing a run on three singles to send the game to extra innings.

Josh Maus led off the 12th inning with a single for Dundas that got by Zach Laffey in right field and he advanced to third base. Maus scored the winning run after the ensuing at-bat, another single to right field by Wadzinski.

Red Wing plays again tonight at Dundas to determine seeding for the Class B Super Sectional Aug. 17-19 in Red Wing.
