The Welch man who led police on a high speed chase through Red Wing last spring was sentenced July 27 to 21 months in prison. Daniel Jon Donno, 38, entered an amended plea before he was sentenced, pleading guilty to one count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
Donno had originally entered not guilty pleas to both the fleeing charge and theft of a motor vehicle charge brought against him. As a result of his amended plea July 27, the theft charge was dismissed.
According to a court complaint filed May 18, Red Wing police tried to stop Donno on Highway 61 for speeding and driving conduct. Donno refused to stop, eventually leading authorities to the Highway 63 bridge.
The chase had been called off, but then Donno got out of the vehicle and jumped into the river. He eventually was pulled from the water and arrested.
Donno will serve his time at Minnesota Correctional Facility–St. Cloud. He will receive credit for 72 days already served. He must also pay just more than $800 dollars in fees.
