The Red Wing VFW baseball team tallied just eight hits total in two losses in the Final Four tournament in Rochester last weekend.
Post 1218 lost 2-1 to Winona and 3-1 to Owatonna. Red Wing led in both games at one point.
“We did a lot of good things,” Post 1218 head coach Jim Bohmbach said. “Played good defense and had good pitching, just didn’t have the timely hits.”
Winona scored a run in the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off victory over Red Wing.
Ty Buck had a no-hitter going through the fifth inning, but Winona got four hits in the last two innings to pull out the victory. Buck finished with eight strikeouts in seven innings and walked one.
Thate Peterson scored Post 1218’s lone run in the second inning when Cam Voigt knocked him in with a base hit.
Things didn’t get any better when Red Wing matched up with Owatonna in the second game of the tournament. Owatonna scored all three of its runs in the top of the sixth for the victory.
Owatonna put a runner on with one out and advanced him on two errors to tie the game. Then with a runner on Owatonna connected for a home run to make it 3-1.
Red Wing took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Gunner Tubbs drove Peterson in on a double.
Cody Leitner threw all seven innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits and struck out four.
Rochester Mayo won the tournament by beating Owatonna to secure a spot in the state tournament.
