Pine Island man charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct

A Pine Island man faces criminal sexual conduct charges for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl. Joseph Daniel Carlson, 18, was charged in Goodhue County District Court Monday with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

According to a court complaint, the charges stem from a July 11 incident in which Carlson invited the 17-year-old to his mother’s house in Pine Island. The girl told investigators that Carlson held her down raped her, the complaint says.

Carlson told investigators that he did have sex with the girl on July 11, but that it was consensual.

Carlson’s next court appearance is Aug. 17.
