The Red Wing Fire Department responded to a natural gas leak on the 1100 block of West Avenue on Monday evening that caused evacuations and street closures.
An investigation revealed that a utility company had inadvertently hit a residential gas line, which released a significant amount of natural gas, the fire department reported. Firefighters and paramedics were on the scene within three minutes of the 6:30 p.m. call to assess the situation, with the help of Xcel Energy gas crews.
Three nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution, and West Avenue was closed for several hours between Sturtevant and Hawthorn streets.
