Amateur Baseball: Aces win Shakopee/Jordan Tournament

JORDAN, Minn. – After struggling in the late innings all season Red Wing has turned things around.

The Aces, who have won their last seven games in a row, won the Shakopee/Jordan Coors Light Tournament this past weekend by thriving in the late innings. Three of Red Wing’s wins came in the late innings at the tournament as the Aces won all four games. The tournament played seven-inning games, which maybe had something to do with it, but Red Wing did vastly improve in an area it needed to all season.

The Aces (17-13, 1-8 Section 1B) defeated St. Michael 9-2 Sunday to clinch the tournament title and the victory came because of their effort in the final two innings.

Chris Guetzlaff went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Tyler Goering went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Dave Jenson and Kyle Blahnik each went 3-for-4 with two runs. Blahnik drove in one run while Adam Thygesen went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Steve Boldt added an RBI.

Jordan Warren got the win after five innings of work. Warren allowed one run on five hits.

Red Wing got things started late again. The Aces scored eight of their nine runs in the last two innings. Red Wing took a 1-0 lead after the top of the second inning and clung to that lead until the top of the sixth when it pushed four runs across. St. Michael responded with a lone run to make it 5-1 but the Aces put up four more runs in the seventh.

Red Wing hits four homers in blowout victory

Red Wing’s offense put away the NWS Redhawks quickly Saturday evening as Alex Quiding, Zach Laffey, Adam Thygesen and Steve Boldt all hit home runs in a 16-1, five-inning rout.

Thygesen went 3-for-3 with three runs and four RBI while Boldt finished 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBI. Laffey went 1-for-3 with three RBI and Quiding went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

The Aces had 14 hits in the game and took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Red Wing added to that lead with a four-run second and an eight-run third inning. The Aces tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth.

Jimmy Bohmbach went 2-for-2 with three RBI as well.

Andy Gibart threw a one-hitter and allowed just a solo shot in the third inning. Gibart struck out three and walked none.

Schroeder dances out of danger for Aces in win

Brady Schroeder worked in and out of jams all day long Saturday for Red Wing, but with some help from the defense, Schroeder and the Aces outlasted Moorhead for a 4-2 victory at the Mini Met.

All six runs of the game were scored in the seventh inning. All games were seven innings at the Shakopee/Jordan Coors Light Tournament.

Schroeder, making just his second start of the season, had two runners on in four innings, but deftly escaped with timely defensive plays and some big strikeouts.

“He made the big pitches when he needed to,” Red Wing player-co-manager Andy Gibart said. “That was a huge effort by Brady.”

Schroeder got a double play in the first inning after Moorhead put runners on first and second with one out to end the inning. In the second inning he got a groundout to short after putting two runners on and in the third inning Josh Thygesen made a diving catch in right field for the second out with two runners on and Schroeder got a strikeout to end the inning. Once more in the fifth inning Moorhead put two runners on, but Schroeder got the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters to strikeout to end the threat.

Schroeder threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Schroeder walked five and struck out five, but avoided any major damage throughout the game.

“Early on he was having trouble throwing his changeup for a strike and his curveball was kind of up in the zone so we had to stick with the fastball mostly,” Aces catcher and co-manager Jimmy Bohmbach said. “He just battled and threw strikes and our defense kind of pulled him out in the early innings until he started getting his changeup and his curveball down.”

Steve Boldt delivered the first run of the game in the top of the seventh with an RBI double to score Tyler Goering, who led off the inning with a single. Bohmbach came through with a two-run single to score Chris Guetzlaff and Boldt to make it 3-0 and Zach Laffey added an RBI double to make it 4-0.

In the seventh trouble finally caught up to Schroeder after he walked the first two hitters. Aaron Johnson came on in relief and gave up two walks to score one run. Jeremy Peschel hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

The Brewers stranded nine runners in the game and had five hits while Red Wing finished with six hits and left eight runners on base.

Boldts help pace Red Wing in opening game of tourney

The Aces opened the tournament with a late-inning victory Friday against Shakopee.

Ryan Boldt went 2-for-4 with a solo homer for Red Wing Friday in a 4-2 victory over Shakopee to open the Shakopee/Jordan Tournament.

Jimmy Bohmbach went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jake Laffey finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Chris Guetzlaff had a 2-for-3 performance with two runs as well.

Steve Boldt threw all seven innings for the victory. Boldt allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six.

Adam Thygesen scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on Bohmbach’s sacrifice fly and Guetzlaff added an insurance run in the seventh on Laffey’s single.
