Red Wing’s Ryan Boldt continued one step closer Sunday to a spot on the USA Baseball U18 National Team.
The roster was cut from 144 to 40 last week and trimmed to 28 this weekend in preparation for the IBAF Junior AAA/18U World Championships in Seoul, South Korea, Aug. 30-Sept 8.
Boldt and Logan Shore, of Coon Rapids, are the only Minnesotans left on the team and are the first to make it this far since Joe Mauer, of Cretin Derham Hall, in 1998.
Boldt hit 6-for-16 in the Tournament of the Stars June 20-24 but had less luck in the 18U National Team Trials and Training phase June 25-July 1. He went 2-for-12 but still managed two stolen bases and made a great catch June 26 to rob Riley Unroe of a hit, according to a USA Baseball Twitter page.
The Prospect Classic finishes up Tuesday in Durham, N.C. and the next 18U National Team training phase will take place Aug. 18-27.
