2012 All-Area Baseball Second Team

Zach VanOstrand, senior, outfield, pitcher, Zumbrota-Mazeppa

VanOstrand hit .440 with 13 RBI and scored 14 runs for the Cougars. VanOstrand was selected as an all-conference player and hit four doubles and two triples in 50 at-bats. VanOstrand was named the team’s MVP and was one of two seniors on the team. “We had a young team and he hung in there and was a constant for us after coming back from a hand injury during the football season that kept him out of all of basketball,” Z-M head coach Chuck Ohm said.

Elliot Cox, sophomore, outfield, Lake City

Cox led the Tigers in six offensive categories this season, including a .429 batting average. Cox led the team with 30 hits, 39 total bases and two triples.

Joel Newman, senior, pitcher, shortstop, second base, Red Wing

Newman finished second amongst the starting staff with a 2.19 ERA in nine starts. Newman went 9-0 in 54 1/3 innings pitched. Newman threw three complete games and struck out 32 during that span. Newman also hit .267 with 12 RBI in 24 games.

Reid Lundell, sophomore, pitcher, catcher, infield, Lake City

Lundell led the Lake City pitching staff this season with a 5-5 record and threw 62 2/3 innings. Lundell walked just 20 in that time and struck out 33. He finished with a 3.13 ERA and batted as the team’s lead-off hitter. Lundell hit .270 with a .432 on-base percentage and drove in 15 runs.

Dennis Schutz, sophomore, outfield, Ellsworth

Schutz displayed great speed, a strong throwing arm, hit with power and fielded his position well, head coach Steve Block said. Schutz hit .373 with 23 runs scored, five triples and five doubles. Schutz drove in 19 runs and stole 11 bases.

Brandon Stevens, junior, pitcher, Zumbrota-Mazeppa

Stevens went 3-5 this season for the Cougars. He had a 2.13 ERA in 36 1/3 innings and allowed 35 hits and 13 walks. Stevens struck out 24 hitters and was named all-conference.

Ian Althoff, junior, outfield, Cannon Falls

Althoff hit second in the order for the Bombers and acted as a catlyst for the offense with a .507 on-base percentage. Althoff hit .368 and had seven stolen bases while scoring 25 runs and walking 13 times.

Dylan Simonic, junior, catcher, Lake City

Simonic finished second on the team with a .366 average in 23 games. Simonic led the team with 23 RBI and six doubles. He added a team-high 10 stolen bases and slugged .438.
