Legion Baseball: Post 54 splits with Hastings

Red Wing Post 54 received great pitching performances but split a doubleheader with Hastings Monday at the Red Wing Athletic Field.

Red Wing Post 54 received great pitching performances Monday but split a doubleheader with Hastings at the Red Wing Athletic Field.

Joel Newman threw a complete game three-hitter for Red Wing in a 5-0 victory in game one.

He struck out five and walked two.

David Goggin finished 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead Post 54 while Zach Garner and Newman each went 2-for-3. Jack Strusz was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Red Wing (2-1) scored two in the first inning, one in the third and two in the fifth.

Game two went to extra innings with Post 54 scoring a run in the ninth inning as the visiting team but Hastings followed with two runs for a walk-off 5-4 nine-inning victory.

Hastings had just six hits but Red Wing made three errors.

Garner threw six innings for Post 54, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out five and finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored at the plate. Andrew Sandstrom was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Preston Blaney went 2-for-4. Trey Eckstrom pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and two unearned runs. He struck out two and walked one.

Red Wing will play St. Paul Park at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Red Wing.
