Red Wing senior Zach Garner was named to the 2012 Class 3A All-Tournament Team for his performance as the Wingers went 1-1 at the state baseball tournament.

Garner, a pitcher and shortstop, struck out seven in six innings and went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored as Red Wing lost 3-1 to eventual state champion Eastview Friday in game one. Then, against Totino-Grace he supplied much of the Wingers’ offense, going 4-6 with two doubles and two RBI, including a two-out game-tying double in the 11th inning to keep Red Wing (23-2) alive in its first state tournament since 1977.

The Wingers consolation championship game against Hill-Murray was cancelled and the two teams shared the title.

During the regular season, Garner went 9-0 on the mound with a 1.20 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings. Garner plans to attend Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount.

Boldt named to all-metro first team

Red Wing secured its first trip to the state tournament since 1977 thanks in large part to the exploits of junior Ryan Boldt.

Boldt, verbally committed to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, led Red Wing (23-2) in nearly every offensive category. He led the Wingers with a .423 batting average, 30 hits, five triples, three home runs, 27 RBI, 15 stolen bases and struck out just two times in 71 at-bats. Boldt tied for the team lead with seven doubles, 22 runs scored and 13 walks. He produced a .789 slugging percentage and a .518 on-base percentage.

Red Wing took home a share of the Class 3A state baseball consolation championship as Boldt went 3-for-7 with two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in two games.

Boldt was also one of three Minnesotans invited to the 2012 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars June 20-24 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
