Amateur Baseball: Aces open tourney with win

Red Wing started its defense of the Dewey Tauer Tournament title Friday with a 10-4 victory over St. Francis at Red Wing Athletic Field.

Red Wing started its defense of the Dewey Tauer Tournament title Friday with a 10-4 victory over St. Francis at Red Wing Athletic Field.

The Aces took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning and added five more in the sixth for an 8-1 lead heading into the last three innings.

Red Wing kept the lead in the late innings and actually increased it in the seventh and eighth innings with single runs. The Saints got three runs back in the eighth, but that was it.

Andy Gibart threw seven innings for the win for the Aces. Gibart gave up one run on seven hits and struck out five. Derek Williamson connected off Gibart in the sixth for a solo homer.

Steve Boldt went 1-for-3 and drove in three runs while Josh Thygesen went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Jordan Warren, Chris Guetzlaff, Jimmy Bohmbach and Zach Laffey each had RBI.

St. Francis had 10 hits in the game and stranded six runners. Williamson went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Travis Elwood went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Luke Grow added an RBI in a 1-for-4 game.

Elwood took the loss after five innings of work. Elwood gave up eight runs, five earned on five hits, walked five and struck out four.

Gibart and Thygesen did not allow a walk in the game for Red Wing.

Red Wing will face the Prior Lake Jays today at 7:30 p.m. in Red Wing.
