A-3 District zoning regulations amended

After the Goodhue County Planning Advisory Commission proposed an amendment to Article 22 of the zoning ordinance, county commissioners unanimously approved its suggestion Tuesday night.

The amendment pertains to the A-3 Urban Growth Zone District regulations and says that parcels of 35 acres or more with an existing dwelling may be split, as long as the dwelling parcel remains at least two acres in size.

The idea came about after staff had received numerous requests from owners who were interested in separating their dwelling from numerous acres of tillable crop land.

The Planning Advisory Commission also recommended the county take a closer look at the classification of the A-3 zone. “Should the boundaries of the A-3 district change or is there still a need for that district?” Goodhue County Planning Director Mike Wozniak asked.

Until the classification is figured out — which is anticipated to take up to two years — the development of additional dwellings on any split parcels is prohibited.
