Editorial: Slow down

“Slow down, you move too fast. You’ve got to make the morning last.”

Simon and Garfunkel wrote the “50th Street Bridge” in the 1960s, but life certainly would be less hectic and our roads safer today if motorists adopted this as their summer theme song.

We will see dozens of road and bridge construction projects throughout Goodhue, Pierce, Pepin, Dakota and Wabasha counties. Some are extensive and on going, such as the Hastings Highway 61 bridge, and some are relatively minor in scope, such as patching residential streets.

All will present risks, however, if motorists don’t slow down, obey the speed limits and stay alert.

Next time you contemplate zipping through a work zone, relax and hum “Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.” It beats singing the car crash blues.
