Red Wing senior Abbey Schnaith can now call herself a state qualifier in two sports after she finished second in the 800-meters Saturday at the Section 1AA at Lakeville South High School in Lakeville.

Schnaith, a five-time all-state swimmer, finished the 800 in 2 minutes, 19.92 seconds to finish just behind Rochester Century’s Jennifer Guibert to qualify for the state meet. The top two individuals in each event and the top two relays advance to the state meet.

“It's kind of frustrating getting third last year and being so close,” Wingers girls track and field head coach Jesse Nelson said. “It's a very quality section and to make it through is very rewarding. She was very happy.”

Schnaith won her heat in the prelims Thursday in 2:22.87 and cut more than three seconds off her prelim time in the finals.

The state meet begins June 8 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

The 4x800 relay team of Schnaith, seventh-grader Elise Leise, junior Kelsee Anderson and freshman Adrienne Hicks finished fifth in 9:45.68.

The Wingers’ 4x100 relay team of senior Katie Stegora, sophomore Meta Buck, senior Ali Anderson and sophomore Emily Stegora finished ninth with a time of 52.61 seconds.

Emily Stegora placed seventh in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.01. Stegora had the second fastest time in school history in the prelims Thursday with a time of 15.96 seconds. Stegora also placed eighth in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 34 feet, 2 1/4 inches.

Red Wing finished 12th as a team. Lakeville South won the meet with 171 points and Lakeville North placed second with 109 points.
