Get ready to embrace your senses because June is going to be a treat for all five of them.
In fact, June 24 is specifically set aside to recognize taste, touch, sight, sound and smell as the day is designated as Celebration of the Senses Day.
But if you save up your excitement until the end of the month, you’ll have missed out on a whole host of other ways to tickle those senses.
For example, June 4 is National Barefoot Day. What better way to highlight the feelings of summer lawns or sandy beaches than by using your toes? Your sense of touch will thank you for the 24 hours of freedom from tennis shoes, high heels and work boots.
The following two days will have your head spinning from diverse sights. Use June 5 to honor Hot Air Balloon Day and take a ride high above the bluffs, letting your sight take in the nature for miles around. Follow up your outdoor excitement with a little relaxation June 6 as you settle in for Drive-In Movie Day and keep your eyes glued on an action-packed thriller.
Although touch and sight have gotten all of your attention so far, it’s taste that’s about to enjoy a real treat – quite literally.
June 8 and 9 are Banana Split Days. Apparently the flavorful summer favorite is so fantastic it’s worthy of spanning longer than most holidays. Of course with three scoops of ice cream doused in warm hot fudge, juicy strawberries and pineapple bits with banana slices on both sides, who can argue with an extra day to celebrate?
As the month progresses get ready to combine taste with smell on June 12 for National Peanut Butter Cookie Day. Bake up a batch and let the aroma fill your home before biting into a fresh-from-the-oven treat. Also consider observing Corn on the Cob Day (June 11), Fudge Day (June 16) and International Sushi Day (June 18).
Truth be told, taste is getting the most attention in June. The month also has been designated to recognize everything from corn and cucumbers to lemons and mangos to dairy products and soul food.
What’s more, soon after the month comes to a close, barbecues will pop up everywhere while Americans prepare for Fourth of July celebrations. The sense of taste couldn’t have it any better.
Up to this point it may seem like the sense of sound is being left out, but all 30 days of June can be an indulgence for the ears if you want them to be.
June is not only Audio Book Appreciation Month, but also African-American Music Appreciation Month and International Surf Music Month.
Although they don’t necessarily pertain to the senses, there are a few more observances in June that simply have to be noted. While some are straightforward, others leave you wondering who created such a holiday.
Several titles share June 2, but perhaps the most unique is Yell “Fudge” at the Cobras in North America Day. There’s no question about how someone would go about celebrating, but there will always be a question as to why.
Two days later it’s time for a salute to silliness with Do-Dah Day. Take note of additional strange observances later in the month as well, such as Ball Point Pen Day on the 10th, Pink Flamingo Day on the 23rd and Decide to be Married Day on the 27th.
June can be exciting as you choose to make it, but be careful or you may end up picking fights with venomous snakes on your honeymoon.
