Red Wing leads by 32 strokes after the first day of competition at the Section 1AAA tournament at the Cannon Falls Golf Club.

Senior Marisa Toivonen shot a first-round low 73 to lead the Wingers and senior Katie Kesti tallied a 79 to sit in second place.

“They just played fantastic today,” Red Wing head coach Mark Herzog said. “It was a real good round for us. It’s a really difficult course.”

Red Wing has six of the top 10 scores after round one and leads with a 326. Northfield is in second place with a 358 and Lakeville North is third at 362.

The Wingers got solid performances throughout the lineup on day one. Seventh-grader Stephanie Herzog, ninth-grader Reagan Haley and junior Maddie Flack all shot 87s while sophomore Nicole Schammel supplied an 88.

“We had good balance through the whole lineup today,” Mark Herzog said. “They were all competitive.”

Red Wing went into the tournament as the favorites but the added pressure did nothing to slow the Wingers so far.

“The girls went out and got after it right away,” Mark Herzog said. “The chances of giving up a 32-shot lead are not very high. We have a really good team that’s playing really good right now. We just have to take care of business on Monday. I couldn’t have been more pleased with how they played today.”

The Wingers compete again Monday, with Haley teeing off first for Red Wing at 10:10 a.m. at the Cannon Falls Golf Club.
