Seventh-ranked Pepin-Alma had no trouble Tuesday in its opening game of the regional playoffs against Independence/Gilmanton in Pepin.
The Eagles (18-3) won 12-2 in five innings and used a seven-run second inning to get rolling.
Breanna Ellison went 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBI for Pepin-Alma. Ellison also got the win after throwing five innings of four-hit ball. Ellison gave up two runs, struck out two and walked three.
Kayla Meixner went 3-for-4 with a triple and drove in two runs for the Eagles and Ali Murray drove in two runs with a 2-for-4 performance. Cori Terpstra finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and Tana Prokosch went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Pepin-Alma will get a rematch with third-ranked Cochrane-Fountain City Thursday at Cochrane-Fountain City. The Pirates beat the Eagles 7-4 May 12 in Pepin and hit three home runs in the game. Pepin-Alma had a 4-2 lead heading into the fifth inning when C-FC tied the game and got three runs in the sixth to win it.
“We have to play perfect defense and we have to pitch better,” Eagles head coach Matt Bellerive said. “We’re very capable of beating that team.”
The winner of Thursday’s game will move on to the sectionals June 4 in Pepin.
