To the Editor:

It is an exciting time for graduating seniors as well as their families. The Red Wing Chemical Health Initiative requests your help in keeping our young people safe during this time. Graduation is a great opportunity for parents and family members to have conversations with their teens about making positive choices and smart decisions.

Beyond the obvious dangers of kids drinking and driving, parents need to know about their own potential social host liability. The city of Red Wing, as well as many areas in and around Goodhue County, has adopted a social host ordinance. This makes it a misdemeanor for persons to knowingly allow minors to obtain, possess, or consume alcoholic beverages at private residences or private premises.

The social host ordinance gives law enforcement a practical tool for holding people accountable if they allow underage drinking to take place on their property.

The Red Wing CHI Council asks for your assistance in endorsing alcohol-free graduation activities. Thank you for partnering with us in communicating a strong alcohol-free message, and for supporting a fun and safe 2012 graduation season.

The Red Wing Chemical Health Initiative congratulates the graduating class of 2012 and wishes the graduates all the best in their future endeavors.
