School notes for the week May 21-15

School happenings throughout Red Wing public and private schools.

Red Cottage Montessori

Year-end celebration

Children wore their pajamas to school Thursday and brought two favorite books to share. That evening, they sang songs and had ice cream with their families and teachers to celebrate the end of the school year. The last day of class was Friday.

Beach day

Friday was the annual beach day along Hay Creek. Children invited their families to join them and ate lunch outdoors. Districtwide

There is no school Monday May 28 for Memorial Day.

Sunnyside School

Walking Wednesdays

On May 23 there were 65 students who walked or rode their bikes to school. Winners were Mercedes Nelson, from Mrs. Bjork’s first-grade, Lezlee Harlow, from Mrs. Swanson’s first-grade, and Joey Bettinger, from Ms. Kelley’s kindergarten.

Field trips

Kindergartners will travel to Hok-Si-La Park in Lake City on the following days:

Tuesday, May 29: Ms. Kelley, Mrs. McDonnell, Mrs. Prahl, Ms. Prigge, Mrs. Tepley-Mahn.

Wednesday, May 30: Mrs. Dressen, Mrs. Fagerlund, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Otterness and Ms. Pumper.

Burnside visit

All first- and second-graders will visit Burnside Elementary Thursday May 31.

All school picnic

On Tuesday June 5, Sunnyside will celebrate the end of the school year with the all-school picnic. Families are invited to join their students for lunch at their regularly scheduled time. (Family members need to bring their own lunch.) The picnic will be outside on the Maple Street playground area. Wait outside to meet your student’s class after they have gone through the lunch line.

St. John’s School

Field trip

St. John’s students will be going to Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge and Wetland Management District and the Sea Life Aquarium at Mall of America May 31 for their annual field trip. They will leave school as soon as the students arrive in the morning and not be back in time for buses. Awards Night will take place that evening at 6:30 p.m.

School picnic

The school picnic is 11 a.m. June 1 in Bay Point Park. Students will be dismissed for the day following the event. The picnic will be held in the Fellowship Hall in case of rain.

School closing service

The school closing service is 10 a.m. June 3. Students in grades K-8 will sing during that service. Report cards will be handed out after the service.

Track and Field

Students in grades 1-8 enjoyed a very windy, warm track and field day.

Little Blessings Preschool

Preschoolers met for play rehearsal at The Sheldon Theatre on Thursday.

Kindergarten

Kindergartners had track and field day last week. They did art on the playground and ate lunch in Central Park. They also reviewed vowels and played the “secret shape” game in math.

Memory Treasure sheet

Joey Engel, Aiden Roper and Mackenzie Nelson completed a Memory Treasure sheet in Alice Danell’s classroom. Joey Engel and Mackenzie Nelson are Penmen of the Week.

Grades 3, 4, 5

Math 3 reviewed factors, multiples, square numbers and the turn-around method while Math 4 reviewed volume, area and length.

Grades 6, 7, 8

Everyday Math 6 learned to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find missing lengths of right triangles. Transition Math began their review of chapter 11. Algebra learned to factor quadratic expressions of the form ax(squared)+bx+c.

Colvill Family Center

End-of-the-year program

Families enjoyed an end-of-the-year program including singing and dancing, and they watched a DVD showing the activities enjoyed throughout the year.

Kindergarten boot camp

Camp will be held at Sunnyside Elementary School from August 13–16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you registered your child for boot camp, you will be notified before July 1 of your child’s placement
