Red Wing’s season came to a close Wednesday in an 8-2 loss to Mayo in the Section 1AAA tournament.

The sixth-seeded Spartans used a four-run fourth and a three-run fifth to advance and leave the Wingers with a one-win season.

“Overall, we were a relatively inexperienced team,” Red Wing head coach Cheryl Borgen said. “We had great leadership from our three seniors. We got a ton experience in our freshmen and sophomores.”

One of those seniors, catcher Elle Anderson, went 2-for-3 with two runs while junior pitcher Laura Chalmers finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a double.

The top of the order combined for all of the Wingers’ eight hits while the bottom half of the order struck out five times. Every player had a hit for Mayo and finished with 12 hits.

The Spartans started bunting more in the later innings and paid off with infield singles and bunt base hits, Borgen said.

Red Wing finished with four errors but only two runs were unearned against Chalmers, who walked three and gave up eight runs.
