A pitchers’ duel through the first four innings turned into a slugfest as the Red Wing Aces fell 11-8 to the Hastings Hawks Wednesday in Hastings.

The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the fourth inning, with each team hitting a solo home run but the Hawks scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-1 lead.

The Aces put together a big inning of their own in the seventh inning, bringing 11 hitters to the plate and scoring six runs to pull within a run at 8-7. Hastings responded with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh and Red Wing added a run without recording an out in the ninth inning before the Hawks’ Deryk Marks shut the door with two strikeouts and a ground out.

Marks threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six. Mark Moriarty got the win, going six innings and allowing one run on five hits, including a home run by Zach Laffey, to go along with six strikeouts.

Hastings’ top six hitters did all the damage, finishing a combined 16-for-27 with 11 RBI and seven extra-base hits.

The Aces were led by Laffey, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Steve Boldt was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Dave Jensen finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and Jimmy Bohmbach went 2-for-5 with two RBI in the loss.

Red Wing hosts Coon Rapids Friday at the Red Wing Athletic Field. The game starts at 8 p.m.
