A Red Wing woman has been named one of 12 finalists who will compete for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way title this year.
Aly Schwartau, 19, was crowned a Goodhue County dairy princess earlier this spring. That allowed her to compete for a finalist spot at a three-day event in St. Joseph, Minn., this past weekend. She was named a finalist Sunday evening.
Contestants were judged on their enthusiasm for and knowledge about the dairy industry, their general ability to communicate and their personal interviews, said Sherry Newell, spokeswoman for the contest’s sponsor, Midwest Dairy Association.
Schwartau is a 2011 Red Wing High School graduate and the daughter of David and Jane Schwartau.
Princess Kay will be crowned Aug. 22, the day before the state fair opens. All 12 finalists will have their heads carved in blocks of butter during the fair.
